In Dreams Awake-the ancient practice of Yoga Nidrā, the radical act of reclaiming your right to rest.
Yoga Nidrā, or Sleep Yoga, is a deeply restorative guided meditation that offers a return to our natural ease of being. With no need for physical movement, it is a ‘horizontal meditation’ on being consciousness: awake and asleep at the same time.
Welcome Home: Yoga is the practice of being alive in the connective tissue of this moment, now. Disturbances, or waves, of agitation in the mind and ego seduce our awareness into false identity with the phenomena of sensations, breath restriction, emotions, thoughts, beliefs and images. Such identification makes us constantly look outside ourselves to find ourselves. In truth, the seer abides in the self. This is the revelation that is Yoga.
Yoga Nidrā emphasizes the radical acts of non-doing, of dis-identification, and of letting sleep this restless being. This guided meditation is a systematic and comprehensive approach to the phenomenon of the world coming to be seen through each of us, in our own unique way, and from the source of our own experience.
In this introductory practice we will consider the essential steps of the practice:
1. Settling into the senses
What is your intention?
A way to your own safety
2. Being present to the body, letting it be just as it is
3. Being present to the breath, letting it be just as it is
4. Being present to feeling and emotion just as they occur, and considering their opposites as just as true
5. Being present to thought, idea and belief just as they occur and considering their opposites as just as true
6. Being present to bliss, as it is actually present in this moment when the seer is not identifying with sensations or trying to control breath, emotions and beliefs
7. Reveal your intention, opening from the heart to what it most deeply desires
8. Coming to eyes open awareness in the world of your being
This practice is ideally done lying down, in a pose of sleep. You are encouraged to bring blankets, pillows, bolsters….anything that you can use to set up your restful nest.
Note: This practice can be done sitting, or in any position, with the encouragement to be as comfortable as possible.
